We alter our bodies to make a point and prove how important something is to us and show with what ideals we wish to align ourselves. The physical manifestations of identity exist beyond what we wear. How much more, then, is this true of tattoos? What about getting your hair dyed like your favorite singer’s? Or maybe getting a piercing to show what an adult you are? It seems like there’s a girl on my Instagram feed chopping off massive amounts of her hair with the caption, “New hair, new me!” every other week. Getting to this point in time might have felt like trying to untangle a strand of Christmas lights, but it was worth it, because nothing is as beautiful and makes you feel fuzzy inside quite like Christmas lights do when you finally get to string them up and plug them in. The events that occurred over the past year or so to lead me here were such a whirlwind, but even so, I wouldn’t change a thing.
